When is a child at risk?

You should contact us if you feel a child needs safeguarding. If you feel that a child is suffering harm, neglect or abuse, we can investigate and take steps to protect the child.

There are many types of abuse, including:

Physical abuse: eg hitting, shaking, burning or scalding, deliberate poisoning, suffocating or otherwise harming a child.

Emotional abuse: e.g. tell a child that they are worthless or that they are loved, humiliated, made to feel scared, or asked to do something that is not reasonable for their age.

Sexual abuse: e.g. encourage or coerce a child into inappropriate sexual acts. This may include physical contact or showing a child pornographic material.

Negligence: e.g. failure to provide adequate food, warmth, security, medical attention, education or mental stimulation.

You do not have to give your name, but it helps us a lot if you do. If you prefer, we will not give the child and their family your name.

You do not need to know everything about the child and what is happening. Just because you are worried, or that something is wrong, is enough.
